From South Miro Street to a New Orleans Favorite: The Story of Felipe’s

A Fresh Start in New Orleans in 2006

To appreciate this milestone, we have to go back to where it all started.

The original Felipe’s concept was founded in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2004 by Tom Brush and Felipe Herrera. Their idea was to offer traditional Mexican flavors, freshly prepared ingredients, and customizable meals in a casual, welcoming environment.

In 2006, Rob Stumm and Elio Todaro brought Felipe’s to New Orleans, opening the first local restaurant at 6215 South Miro Street, next door to Elio’s Wine Warehouse.

The timing was significant.

New Orleans was still rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina, and the city was finding its footing after one of the most challenging periods in its history.

Opening a new restaurant required confidence in the city’s future, a willingness to work hard, and a belief that great food could bring people together.

Rob and Elio saw an opportunity to introduce something special to the New Orleans dining scene: a neighborhood Mexican taqueria serving scratch-made food in a fun, approachable atmosphere.

Their vision was about more than tacos and burritos. It was about creating a gathering place where guests could enjoy fresh food, friendly hospitality, and the energy that makes New Orleans special.

And from that little restaurant on South Miro Street, something wonderful began to grow.

A Family-Owned Restaurant with Deep New Orleans Roots

Felipe’s has grown considerably since opening in 2006, but its connection to New Orleans remains at the heart of the business.

Today, Felipe’s continues to be a family-owned, New Orleans-based restaurant group led by Rob Stumm and his family.

Our Home Office is located on Tchoupitoulas Street, and our restaurants continue to be shaped by the guests, team members, and neighborhoods we serve.

Over the years, we’ve celebrated birthdays, graduations, football victories, Mardi Gras festivities, family gatherings, and countless ordinary days made a little better by good food.

For many guests, Felipe’s has become part of their New Orleans story.

Maybe it was your first burrito after moving to the city. Your favorite lunch between classes. A late-night taco run with friends. Or a margarita that turned into a new weekly tradition.

Those memories mean everything to us.

Because after 20 years, Felipe’s isn’t just about what we serve. It’s about the people who keep coming back.

Growing with New Orleans: Four Restaurants, One Felipe’s Spirit

What started with one restaurant on South Miro Street has grown into four Felipe’s locations throughout the New Orleans metro area.

Each restaurant has its own personality, but they all share the same commitment to scratch-made Mexican cuisine, generous hospitality, and creating a welcoming place for guests.

Felipe’s Uptown: Where It All Began

6215 S. Miro Street, New Orleans, LA 70125

Our original New Orleans restaurant opened in 2006 and remains a special part of Felipe’s history.

From Tulane students and neighborhood regulars to families who have been visiting for years, Uptown has welcomed countless guests through its doors.

That’s why we’re hosting our 20th Anniversary Fiesta right here on November 7.

Felipe’s French Quarter: Bringing the Fiesta Downtown

301 N. Peters Street, New Orleans, LA 70130

In 2009, Felipe’s expanded into the French Quarter, introducing our scratch-made Mexican cuisine and margaritas to one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.

Just steps from the Mississippi River, our French Quarter restaurant has become a favorite for locals, visitors, and anyone looking for great Mexican food in downtown New Orleans.

Felipe’s Mid City: A Neighborhood Gathering Place

411 N. Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70119

Felipe’s continued growing with the opening of our Mid City restaurant in 2013.

With its lively atmosphere, spacious setting, and convenient location along Carrollton Avenue, Mid City has become a popular gathering place for lunch, dinner, margaritas, and celebrations.

Felipe’s Metairie Road: A New Chapter

2004 Metairie Road, Metairie, LA 70005

In 2023, Felipe’s opened its fourth New Orleans metro restaurant on Metairie Road.

Designed with a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere, outdoor seating, and a lively bar, our Metairie restaurant brought the Felipe’s experience to even more guests in Jefferson Parish.

What Makes Felipe’s Special After 20 Years?

Restaurants come and go, and New Orleans certainly has no shortage of incredible places to eat.

So what has kept guests coming back to Felipe’s for two decades?

We believe it comes down to a few simple things.

1. Scratch-Made Mexican Cuisine, Prepared with Care

At Felipe’s, we’ve always believed great food starts with great ingredients and a commitment to preparing food the right way.

Our kitchens prepare fresh salsas, seasoned proteins, rice, beans, and other favorites in small batches throughout the day.

From slow-cooked carnitas and grilled chicken to our freshly prepared guacamole, every ingredient plays a part in creating the flavors our guests love.

It’s traditional Mexican cuisine with a Felipe’s twist, prepared fresh and served your way.

2. Make-It-Your-Way Mexican Food

One of the things that makes Felipe’s unique is the freedom to create your perfect meal.

Choose a Super Burrito, tacos, a bowl, nachos, a quesadilla, or a salad. Then make it your own with your favorite proteins, toppings, and salsas.

With more than 125 million possible taco combinations, there’s always something new to discover.

And two things haven’t changed:

Guac is not extra.

Your first cheese on an entrée is on us.

We believe great food should be generous, customizable, and made exactly how you like it.

3. Award-Winning Margaritas Worth Celebrating

You can’t throw a proper Felipe’s fiesta without margaritas!

Our hand-squeezed Key Lime Margaritas have become a New Orleans favorite, whether served Rocks or Frozen.

Made with freshly squeezed citrus and inspired by the flavors of Mexico, they’re the perfect complement to our scratch-made Mexican cuisine.

Our margaritas have also earned recognition from New Orleans guests and readers.

In the 2026 Gambit Best of New Orleans awards, Felipe’s was voted:

  • #1 Best Mexican Restaurant
  • #1 Best Happy Hour
  • #1 Best Margarita
  • #2 Best Tacos

Those honors mean even more because they come from the guests and neighbors who have supported us over the years.

What better way to celebrate our 20th Tacoversary than raising a glass to New Orleans?

4. Hospitality That Makes Every Visit Special

Our mission has always been bigger than serving delicious food.

We want to create value through hospitality.

That means greeting guests with a smile, making them feel welcome, helping them discover something new, and creating a place where they want to return.

Whether you’re visiting Felipe’s for the first time or the hundredth, we want every experience to feel special.

Because a great restaurant isn’t built on food alone. It’s built on relationships.

To Our Team Members: Thank You for 20 Incredible Years

Behind every taco, burrito, margarita, and memorable guest experience is a team member who makes it happen.

Over the past two decades, thousands of people have contributed their time, energy, creativity, and talents to Felipe’s.

Some have been with us for many years. Others helped shape our story during different chapters of our growth.

Every contribution matters.

From the kitchen teams preparing food from scratch to the burreros building each guest’s perfect meal, the bartenders squeezing fresh citrus, and the managers leading their restaurants, our team members are the reason Felipe’s has reached this milestone.

They’ve helped us grow, improve, overcome challenges, and create a restaurant experience that keeps guests coming back.

To every current and former Felipe’s team member: Thank you for being part of our story.

Twenty years of Felipe’s would not have been possible without you.

To Our Guests and Neighbors: This Celebration Is for You!

New Orleans has given Felipe’s so much over the past 20 years.

You’ve welcomed us into your neighborhoods, introduced us to your friends and families, celebrated milestones with us, supported our restaurants through good times and challenging ones, helped us grow from one little restaurant on South Miro Street into a New Orleans favorite, and given us opportunities to support the city we love through local fundraisers, school partnerships, charitable initiatives, and neighborhood events.

We don’t take any of that for granted.

Some of our guests have been visiting since the very beginning. Others are discovering Felipe’s for the first time.

We appreciate every one of you.

Twenty years. Millions of memories. And a whole lot of tacos.

The best part is knowing there are still more memories to make.
