Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is coming up on Sunday and Monday (November 1st and 2nd). While this holiday has traditionally been celebrated in southern Mexico, it is now celebrated all over the world!
It is believed that the gates of heaven open at midnight on October 31st and the spirits of deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their family for a whole day. Then, on November 2nd, the spirits of adults come down from heaven to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones. Families decorate altars for their loved ones with candles, flowers, bread, mole, tortillas, toys, coffee, cigarettes, and even tequila! While the holiday can be expensive, families see it as important to take these days to honor their late family members. The day after (November 3rd), the families spend the day cleaning tombs and reminiscing.
Why is this holiday becoming so popular in the United States? One reason could be because we do not really have a way to honor our dead, and this holiday allows us to celebrate and reminisce. Another reason could be that Americans need another excuse to drink tequila and eat tortillas!
